Eyelid Surgery

Cosmetic eyelid surgery, known as blepharoplasty, is a procedure to improve the appearance of the upper and/or lower eyelids. Loose skin and fat are removed from your upper eyelid area through an incision that is hidden within the natural eyelid crease. The lower lid blepharoplasty incision is hidden just below your lower lash line. Through this incision, excess skin, muscle and fat are removed or appropriately repositioned.

When to Consider Eyelid Surgery

  • If you notice loose, sagging skin of the upper eyelid.
  • If your upper and lower lids consistently look puffy, making you look tired.
  • If you have excess fatty deposits and under eye bags.
  • If you have significant hollows under your eyes.

Dr. Kay’s Approach

Dr. Kay takes a comprehensive look at the eyes to determine which blepharoplasty technique is best suited for your individual goals. For example, if your lower eyelid skin is not excessive, Dr. Kay may opt to use a technique, called a transconjunctival blepharoplasty, which removes or repositions fat through an incision placed inside the lower lid.

PROS

  • Often, a small amount of skin removal around the eyes makes a tremendous difference in giving you a more vibrant, awake, and youthful appearance.

CONS

  • Bruising and swelling is typical pos2-surgery.
  • During the recovery period, your eyes can be dry and itchy.

Related Procedures

If your upper eyelid problem is aggravated by sagging of your brow, then, alternatively, a brow lift might be recommended instead of, or in addition to, an upper blepharoplasty.

FAQs

You can expect some swelling and variable bruising for a week or longer. Your vision may be somewhat blurry for a few days and you will need to wear dark glasses to protect the eyes from wind and sun. Within a week, the stitches are removed and makeup may be applied to help conceal any remaining discoloration from bruising.

Typical recovery time after a blepharoplasty is 1 to 2 weeks. Most people will be able to return to normal activities after 2 weeks. You should be able to wear makeup after the incisions have healed in approximately 1 week.

A blepharoplasty, both upper and lower, can be used to tighten skin around the eyes and reduce wrinkling in these areas. Not all wrinkles will be addressed by eyelid surgery, and therefore we often combine the surgical procedure with fractionated laser resurfacing and/or Botox to improve the texture of the skin and to reduce visible fine lines and wrinkles.
