Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion is a surgical procedure that helps to “refinish” the skin’s top layers through a method of controlled surgical abrasion using a high-speed rotary wheel. This procedure is most often used to improve the appearance of facial skin left scarred by accidents or previous surgery, or to smooth out facial wrinkles, especially those around the mouth that are resistant to milder treatments. Because the protective upper layers of skin are deliberately removed, special care of the skin is required during the 7 to10 day initial healing process. Treated skin remains pink for several weeks following this initial healing, but can be easily concealed with mineral make-up.
When to Consider Dermabrasion
- If you have ‘smokers lines’ around your mouth (regardless if you were actually a smoker or not).
- If you have scarring, either acne or traumatic.
Dr. Kay’s Approach
During your consultation, Dr. Kay will take factors such as skin type, skin thickness, and lifestyle into consideration along with the damage you are trying to correct. Is it sun damage, scarring, pigment, fine lines, deep wrinkles, or any combination of these you hope to improve? If dermabrasion is deemed to be the best fit treatment for you, you will need to prep the targeted area with medical-grade skin care products in the weeks leading up to your procedure. (These products are supplied to you, and are not an additional cost.) Dermabrasion can be performed using oral sedation and local anesthesia, but the majority of patients opt for sedation administered by an anesthesiologist.

CONS

- The treated area can retain redness for up to 6 weeks.
- There is some discomfort during the initial healing phase, which requires conscious care several times per day.
