Male Breast Reduction
Male breast reduction surgery, also known as gynecomastia surgery, is a procedure that reduces the size of breasts in men. At Perfection Plastic Surgery and Skin Care, we understand that large breasts in men can cause significant emotional distress and social discomfort. Dr. Peter Kay and our entire staff prioritize patient care and comfort. Therefore, we treat every patient with dignity and respect, and guarantee patient confidentiality.
About Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia is a condition in which the breast tissue of boys or men becomes enlarged. It may affect one or both breasts. Generally, gynecomastia isn’t considered a medically significant problem, but it can have serious adverse effects on a person’s psychological well-being and personal life.
When you meet with Dr. Kay at Perfection Plastic Surgery, he will consider the possible causes of gynecomastia. Hormonal imbalances are a common cause. However, the condition can sometimes be caused by medications, illicit drugs, and underlying medical conditions. For your own safety, please be sure to disclose all health conditions you have and drugs you may be taking, whether they are prescribed, over the counter (OTC), or illicit. The surgery requires general anesthesia, and certain drugs or medical conditions can affect a patient’s safety while under anesthesia.
Good Candidates for Male Breast Reduction Surgery
During your consultation with Dr. Kay, he will determine whether you are a good candidate for male breast reduction surgery. In general, good candidates are those for whom the following is true:
- In good overall health
- Non-smoking
- Realistic expectations
- Stabilized breast development
In addition, good candidates are those whose gynecomastia cannot be resolved through nonsurgical treatments.
Dr. Kay’s Surgical Planning Approach
Dr. Kay develops each surgery plan on an individual basis, considering your unique needs. For male breast reduction surgery, the most important factor to consider is whether the enlarged breasts are primarily due to excess fatty tissue or glandular tissue. It’s also necessary to consider the elasticity of the skin. For men who primarily have excess fatty tissue and lack an excess of skin, liposuction alone may accomplish their aesthetic goals.
Men who primarily have excess glandular tissue will require the excision technique. Dr. Kay will also use the excision technique for men who have excess skin, require an areola reduction, and/or require the repositioning of the nipple.
